Published or Reader Reviews

"Life's roadmap made simple:just what we all need!"

—Emme, supermodel and best-selling author

"Compiled by professional speaker Jan Yager, Road Signs on Life's Journey: Sayings and Insights to Help You Find Your Way is an inspirational 'do-it-yourself' book comprised of quotable quotes of wisdom, all of which are presented as 'road signs.'

Enhanced with an extensive bibliography, as well as sections for writing down one's own thoughts, Road Signs on Life's Journey is enthusiastically recommended for anyone seeking to improve their perspectives on life as well as the way they live. AS much fun to browse through in its own right as it is to provide food for thoughtful reflection, Road Signs on Life's Journey invests its quips with heart and soul. 'Don't try to see the past through the prism of the present.'-Dr. Jackson, History 137."

Midwest Book Review (Bethany's Bookshelf")

"Road Signs on Life's Journey is an excellent inspirational book for young people leaving the nest or graduating by an experienced mom and sociologist. The book is filled with 258 pithy nuggets of wisdom placed in various road sign graphics. They are based on common sense and common courtesy. Although our bookstore staff has always recommended Yay You [by Sandra Boynton] for graduate gifts, we are now going to be recommending this book, because of its practicality. We rated it five hearts."

—Heartlandreviews.com (Bob Spear)

"Wisdom for young and older" by Joy Dickinson (article about Jan Yager and her book, Road Signs on Life's Journey), published in the Dallas Morning News, September 1, 2003, pages 1E, 6E.

"Jan Yager has discovered a way to put love in a book. It's a wise and witty compilation of thoughts-all things you hope your kids will remember as they begin their lives as young adults. Pack it in their suitcase when they leave for college and tell them to read it cover to cover as their first assignment."

—Lynn A. Robinson, author, Compass of the Soul

NEW ADVICE BOOK

SHARES 258 NUGGETS

OF WISDOM

In the unique and inspirational book, ROAD SIGNS ON LIFE'S JOURNEY: Sayings and Insights to Help You Find Your Way (ISBN 1-889262-91-9  $21.95 hardcover, 104 pages, publication date: June 2003, Spanish edition to be published in 2005 Latin America by Editorial Diana of Mexico, 2004), Dr. Jan Yager shares the wisdom that what's she's learned as an author, sociologist, and consultant as well as from her life experience as a parent, wife, and college professor.

Road Signs on Life's Journey was inspired by the author's realization that her oldest son, when he was filling out college applications, would soon be graduating and leaving home to attend school. In this book, Dr. Yager shares advice on everything from maximizing your success as a college or graduate student and dealing with change to insights about friendship, romance, and getting along with siblings and family members. Each of the 258 sayings is placed within a unique sign adding eye appeal to this special little book. Here are a few samples of the sayings by Dr. Jan Yager that are in Road Signs on Life's Journey:

"#1.  Studying is like laundry: it's easier if you do some each day and don't let it pile up.

#3.   Learning your limitations may be as educational as learning your strengths.

#15. Be loyal to your friends but first and foremost be loyal to yourself.

#54. Promise less, deliver more.

#175. Cultivate sharp listening and thinking skills. That is how you will learn the most."

There are also more than a dozen quotes from others mixed in with Dr. Yager's original sayings, such as from Cicero, philosopher Ayn Rand, and Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Readers will also find a place for reflecting on their favorite books as well space for the reader or others, such as a parent, sibling, friend, or extended family member, to share their own advice.

As Jan Yager, the former J.L. (Janet Lee) Barkas, writes in the Introduction to Road Signs on Life's Journey: "I started college at the age of sixteen, arriving for freshman orientation feeling very fearful, alone, and nervous. That first year was a tough adjustment in so many ways. I wish I had a guidebook of advice from either of my parents to turn to during that year. O f course I had their phone

calls and occasional letters, but there's something about a book that's accessible and solid."

Dr. Yager's books include: When Friendship Hurts (Simon & Schuster, Inc., Fireside, 2002), Friendshifts®: The Power of Friendship and How It Shapes Our Lives (Hannacroix Creek Books, 1997; 2nd ed, 1999); Business Protocol (Wiley, 1991; 2nd ed, Hannacroix Creek, 2001), Single in America (Atheneum, 1980), The Help Book ( Scribner's, 1979), the novel Untimely Death (Hannacroix Creek, 1998), Creative Time Management for the New Millennium (Hannacroix Creek, 1999), and other titles.

An adjunct sociology professor at the University of Connecticut, Stamford campus, Dr. Yager (www.drjanyager.com) has a Ph.D. in sociology (City University of New York, 1983). She has also taught at Penn State, St. John's, and The New School.
